NCSR supports the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) from 1 July 2025

1 July 2025 marks the launch of the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP). The program uses low-dose computed tomography (low-dose CT) scans to identify lung cancer at an earlier stage when treatment is more effective, aiming to save hundreds of lives each year from lung cancer.
Australians aged 50 to 70 who currently smoke or have a history of smoking tobacco cigarettes—but who do not have symptoms of lung cancer—are encouraged to speak with their healthcare provider to find out if they’re eligible to participate.
The launch of the NLCSP marks a major milestone for Australia as it expands its cancer screening efforts with the addition of the new lifesaving program—joining the existing screening programs in the mission to improve health outcomes across Australia.
The National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) is supporting participants and their healthcare providers in the NLCSP by:
- reminding enrolled people to screen
- following up on scan results
- maintaining a national database of low-dose CT scan results.
